Module 25, Unit 2, Activity 2
What are some particularly helpful resources offered to language learners in your community?
Being a librarian I went straight to the local library to search for resources. I also used to work for this public library system so I knew that some resources existed. I was sort of wowed by how many have accumulated since I worked there six years ago. Additionally, I am impressed with how well they have adapted to being closed for covid-19. I am impressed that they are still able to offer tutoring and conversation groups virtually. That, I think, is extremely important for language learners and very helpful during these times.
What do you see being offered in peer communities that are not in your local area?
I didn’t think to look in the plethora of places my peers thought to look. I really like the thought of resources being offered by local museums, which being outside of DC, which has the Smithsonian network, I am sure there are a ton of language resources available there. I think I took a pretty narrow view for finding resources in my community. I also like that people looked at clinics and hospitals, as well as local charities. Were I to do this assignment again, I think, after seeing my peers’ work, I would cast a much wider net of places that could possibly have language resources.
What 1-2 community resources would you like to see added to your local area and why?
I found a lot of resources where people could interact that were aimed at adults. I would really like to see more resources that are interactive aimed at children in my community. I think people assume they are getting what they need for language acquisition at school, but coming from China, where a lot of language learning happens outside the classroom, I would really like to see more activities and resources for kids. I think that is a huge gap in the resources being offered in my community.
